Cookery at our Branch

A great tradition of the CWA (and probably its most well-known part!) is the cookery.

Known for our famous scones, this iconic bake continues to be a highlight at Sydney’s annual Royal Easter Show, where city and country gather to support the CWA Tea Rooms in one of our Association’s largest fundraising events of the year.

As many organisations evolve over time, so has the CWA in order to meet the changing needs of the communities we live in and the different demands of today. So now, as well as some ‘virtual’ online branches, we even have no bake branches!

At CWA Sydney City, we enjoy ‘making and baking’ a number of different ways

  • We have a love of preserving – especially so to drive our fundraising efforts at various community markets around Sydney, such as Carriageworks Farmers Market at Eveleigh, North Sydney Community Market and the Concord Rotary Farmers Market.

  • Some of our members are dedicated to searching out seasonal produce from our farmers to help us turn them into delicious jars of jams, chutneys, relishes and pickles which we then sell. We’ve also become preserving mentors for other branches, sharing what we know to help them in their jam-making and fundraising drives.

  • We bake and take our delicious scones to sell on market days as well – and on special days and events, we’ll take that baking further by making our favourites to share with our communities.

  • Being eager to pass on our ‘jamming’ knowledge, we often hold ‘how to’ days for our members, teaching the in’s and out’s of preserving safely and wholesomely. We even hold ‘chop and chat’ days when bulk produce needs a bulk approach. These fun learning days also extend to perfecting scone making, across to baking Anzac biscuits in bulk for special events.

  • As a Branch, we’re keen competitors in the Association’s annual The Land Cookery which is open to members and non-members alike (including categories for juniors!). See our page The Land Cookery Competition for more on this highly contested State-wide competition. Over the years, a few of our members have blitzed other competitors becoming blue-ribbon and other placegetting winners.

  • And, you’ll see us sharing recipes with one another on the bakes we think really make the grade!

Not a cook? Not a problem! Our members also lend a hand for market days by labelling, packaging, transporting, selling – or completely turning their hand to handicrafts, social issues, ag + environment, cultural or international interests. Or do the lot!
