Handicraft at CWA Sydney City

Time-honoured ‘granny skills’ like knitting, crocheting and hand stitching are well-loved crafts among any of our members. So much so, that some even bring them along to keep their hands busy at Branch meetings!

We’re keen to learn new skills and often do at our regular member workshops which are held to encourage, hone and refresh your talents – no matter whether a beginner or more advanced. There’s no judgement here! However, there is at competition level…

The State Handicraft Committee runs their annual competition to showcase the best work in a range of categories. Judging takes place at the State Conference in May each year.

The rules of participation can be exacting; all instructions must be followed to a tee when entering to be in the running for judging and prizewinning. Showcasing the best work in a range of the categories, all the requirements can be found in the State Handicraft Exhibition Schedule 2025/2026. This competition is only open to all financial members of the CWA.

Winners at branch level go on to compete at Group, and if you make it through that round, you go on to State Finals. We’re thrilled to have a few CWA Sydney City members as State Competition blue ribbon and other prize winners.

Labours of love

As part of our continued support to the community, for a few years now we have been donating our beautifully hand-decorated calico bags for women who have received treatment at the Gynaecological Cancer Ward at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick.

Patients who receive treatment through the radiation oncology and outpatients departments are given special therapy equipment to prevent ongoing problems after radiotherapy. The only option the ward has had is to put this personal equipment in paper bags as anything more has been too expensive.

We hope these bags help brighten each patient's day during this tough time.
